Sungrow and Globeleq ink term sheet for BESS project in South Africa

Sungrow and Globeleq have inked a BESS supply and a 15-year long-term service term sheet for the Red Sands battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The project is situated in South Africa and has a capacity of 153 MW/612 MWh. The project is a part of South Africa’s inaugural Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (BESIPPPP). It is expected to reach financial close in 2025 and will begin operations in 2027.

World Bank approves $350 million grant for hydropower storage project in Malawi

The World Bank has approved a $350 million grant to support Malawi’s Mpatamanga Hydropower Storage Project (MHSP). The grant has been approved by the International Development Association (IDA). The project was co-developed by the Government of Malawi and the International Finance Corporation, which is a part of the World Bank Group, as a public-private partnership. The capacity of the project is 358.5 MW.

Qair secures approval for wind and solar projects in Morocco

Qair has secured key approvals for its Tetouan wind and Tiznit solar projects in Morocco. Both the projects will generate 505 GWh of clean energy annually. The projects will support Moroccan industries and reduce carbon emissions. The Tetouan wind farm is expected to start operations in 2029 and will produce 390 GWh per year. The Tiznit solar project, set for commissioning in late 2027, will generate 115 GWh annually.

Masdar completes full acquisition of TERNA ENERGY

Masdar has completed a 100 per cent acquisition of TERNA ENERGY SA. Masdar had acquired 70 per cent of TERNA ENERGY from GEK TERNA SA and other shareholders in November 2024. The full acquisition was achieved after completion of an all-cash mandatory tender offer (MTO) and squeeze-out process for the remaining 30 per cent shares of the company at a price of  Є20 per share.

Egypt and France ink agreement for green hydrogen project 

Egypt and France have inked an agreement to establish an integrated green hydrogen and derivatives production complex, including green ammonia, in the Ras Shukeir region of Egypt. The project will consist of three phases and is expected to draw investments of approximately €7 billion. Furthermore, once operational, the project is expected to generate approximately one million tonnes of green ammonia annually.

Scatec inks PPA for 120 MW solar plant in Tunisia

Scatec has inked a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) for a 120 MW solar power plant named Sidi Bouzid II in Tunisia. The PPA has been signed with Tunisian state utility Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (STEG). Scatec also inked a joint development agreement, with Aeolus SAS which is a part of the Japanese conglomerate Toyota Tsusho Group, for the solar plant. Furthermore, the estimated total capital expenditure for the project is €87 million.

GreenGo Energy inks agreement for green hydrogen development in Mauritania

GreenGo Energy has inked an agreement for the development of a large-scale green hydrogen project in Mauritania. According to this agreement, GreenGo Energy will have access to more than 100,000 hectares of land near Nouakchott, Mauritania for the development of the Megaton Moon Green Hydrogen Project. With this agreement, GreenGo Energy has entered into the development phase of the project. The full capacity of the Megaton Moon project will include  6 GW of electrolysis, 6.8 GW of onshore wind, and 6.3 GWp of solar PV.

ACWA Power inks PPA for 2 GW wind project in Egypt

ACWA Power has inked a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) for a 2 GW wind project in Egypt. The investment in the project is approximately $2.3 billion. The project is expected to reach financial close in 2026. Furthermore, this wind project will support the Egyptian government in increasing the share of renewable energy in its electricity generation mix to 42 per cent by 2030. It is also expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 3.5 million tonnes annually.

EWEC issues RFP to develop 140 MW wind project in Abu Dhabi

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) has issued a request for proposal (RFP) for the development of the Al Sila Wind Independent Power Project (IPP). Once operational, the project is expected to generate up to 140 MW of renewable energy and displace 190,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Furthermore, the RFP is being issued to 16 companies and consortiums that qualified for this stage after submitting statements of qualification. These companies were shortlisted in October 2024.

Turkey awards 800 MW of solar capacity in YEKA auction round

The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey has awarded 800 MW of solar energy capacity in the latest round of the YEKA program (Yenilenebilir Enerji Kaynak Alanlari). These projects will be established in Konya, Karaman, Malatya Van, Antalya, and Kütahya. The selected bidders will have the opportunity to sell the electricity they generate in the free market for 60 months after inking the contract. A total of 146 applications were submitted by 67 local and foreign companies.

AMEA Power commissions 500 MW Abydos solar plant in Egypt

AMEA Power has commissioned the 500 MW Abydos Solar PV Plant in Egypt, located in the Aswan Governorate. The plant will generate approximately 1,500 GWh of renewable energy annually, offsetting 782,300 tonnes of carbon emissions. This project was completed in 18 months. The Abydos Solar PV Plant was financed by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank (FMO), and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

GAFI and Hynfra partner on $1.6 billion green ammonia project 

Egypt’s General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) has partnered with Polish company Hynfra to develop a green ammonia production facility with an initial investment of $1.6 billion. The first phase of the plant will be powered entirely by renewable energy, such as solar and wind. Surplus electricity will contribute to Egypt’s national grid, while the facility will export its output to the European Union under long-term agreements.

ABO Energy sells rights of two BESS projects in South Africa to EDF

ABO Energy has sold the rights of two battery energy storage systems (BESS) in South Africa to French Électricité de France (EDF) after developing them into ready-to-build status. EDF was awarded preferred bidder status for both projects on November 30, 2023 in the first bid window of the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.
