India reinstates ALMM for solar power sector

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has decided to reimpose the regulatory measure of Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) for solar PV modules from April 1, 2024 in India. As per a new order by the ministry, the scope of the reintroduced ALMM will be limited. It will be applicable only to solar power projects sponsored or subsidised by the central or state governments.

India announces incentives for green hydrogen

The Indian Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has introduced a framework for incentive implementation to encourage the annual production of 200,000 metric tonnes (MT) of green hydrogen. The MNRE may determine any additional capacity for subsequent phases, if applicable. The incentives will be awarded for a duration of three years. It has further established the incentive implementation structure for generating and delivering green ammonia at the most economical rate through a competitive selection procedure within mode 2A of the SIGHT initiative.

First Solar to procure green energy from Cleantech Solar for its India facility

Cleantech Solar has entered into a captive power purchase agreement (PPA) with First Solar for a period of 15 years. As per the contract, First Solar will receive power from Cleantech Solar’s 150 MW and 16.8 MW of solar and wind assets in Tamil Nadu, India. This renewable power will be used to power First Solar’s recently established 3.3 GW vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility, situated in Tamil Nadu.

Gurīn Energy to develop 2 GWh BESS in Japan

Gurīn Energy has announced plans to develop, build and operate a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Japan. The planned project is a 500 MW capacity, four-hour BESS that will be able to store up to 2 GWh of electricity, or enough electricity to charge 50,000 electric vehicles. The projected cost of development for the project is $600 million over a six-year period. Construction on the BESS is expected to begin in 2026.

RWE, Osaka Gas, Mitsui bag 684 MW offshore wind project in Japan

RWE Offshore Wind Japan Murakami-Tainai K.K. has been chosen in a consortium together with Mitsui & Co., Ltd. and Osaka Gas to provide a commercial-scale offshore wind project off the coast of the cities of Murakami and Tainai, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The Japanese government has chosen the consortium to design, build, and manage a fixed-bottom offshore wind farm off Japan’s west coast.

United Solar to invest $1.73 billion in Sri Lankan solar project

United Solar Group has proposed to invest  $1.73 billion to construct a 700 MW solar power plant with a battery energy storage system at Poonakary Lake located in Kilinochchi. The Power and Energy Minister has recently sought the approval of the Cabinet of Ministers to accept the project proposal presented by United Solar Energy SL Pvt Company, a part of United Solar Group, in principle.

Sembcorp acquires wind assets in China and India

Sembcorp Industries (Sembcorp) has signed two separate agreements to acquire a total of 428 MW of wind assets in China and India. Sembcorp’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Energy (Shanghai) Holding Co Ltd, has signed an agreement with Envision Energy Co Ltd to acquire 100 per cent of the share capital in Qinzhou Yuanneng Wind Power Co. Ltd, (Qinzhou Yuanneng) for an equity consideration of approximately $130 million.

EBRD finances CPIH’s 100 MW Kazakh wind farm

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has approved a loan of $39 million to China Power International Holding (CPIH) to support the construction of a 100 MW wind farm to be built in Kazakhstan. The Shokpar wind farm, which is located in the Sarysu district in the Zhambyl region of the country, is an extension of the Zhanatas wind farm.

Sembcorp explores offshore wind power import from Vietnam

Sembcorp Industries Ltd has announced that it is exploring investing through a wholly-owned subsidiary in the development of offshore wind projects in Vietnam with the goal of exporting electricity to Singapore. As per the Singapore-based energy and urban development company, Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd and Petrovietnam Technical Services Corporation, a part of the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group.

Bangladesh awards 50 MW solar project

A consortium of Ask New Energy Company Limited, AJ Power Company Limited, and ATN Solutions Limited has won a contract to build a 50 MW solar project. The project will be located in Nilphamari District, Dimla, northwestern Bangladesh. The project will be set up on the basis of a build-own-operate model. The power obtained from the plant will be sold to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) at a tariff of 0.098 per kWh.

Northland Power receives CPPA for offshore wind project in Taiwan

For its offshore wind farm in Taiwan, Canadian energy company Northland Power has entered into a corporate power purchase agreement (CPPA) with an investment-grade counterparty. In accordance with the 20-year CPPA, the buyer will receive all of the clean energy produced by the Hai Long 2B and 3 projects. The two projects will start operating in late 2026 and have a combined capacity of 744 MW.

World Bank approves $165 million funding for residential rooftop solar projects in India

In order to support 450 MW of rooftop solar deployment in India and to make distributed generation systems in the country more affordable, the World Bank has approved an additional $165 million in financing. The development bank has previously given India’s grid-connected rooftop solar program, which primarily focuses on commercial and industrial rooftop PV systems, $648 million.

Philippines allocates 1.57 GW of solar in auction

Under the first round of the 2 GW Green Energy Auction Program, the Philippines’ Department of Energy awarded 19 contracts to develop 1.57 GW of renewable energy projects. Solar, hydro, wind, and biomass projects in the Philippines’ Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao regions were auctioned out. The winning bids will receive 20-year power supply agreements. The projects are planned to start up between 2023 and 2025.
