Redesigning the national electricity market in Australia

The Energy Security Board (ESB) in Australia released its recommendations for the redesign of the national electricity market on August 26, 2021. These were submitted to energy ministers on the Energy National Cabinet Reform Committee (ENCRC) at the end of July 2021. The ESB is recommending four key pathways for reform to manage both the orderly exit of old technologies (especially ageing coal fuelled generation) and pave the way for new technologies.

Over the last few years, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has placed emphasis on the off-grid component of energy access by funding important pilot projects for the development of mini-grids and for the distribution of Solar Home Systems (SHS) through the EIB Off grid Solar Programme, which has been successful in East and Central Africa. The European Investment Bank, in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance, commissioned this study by Dalberg Global Development Advisors to determine the economic and commercial feasibility for enhancing off-grid solar in Sub Saharan Africa (SSA).

AES Andes to set up a 258 MW wind farm in Chile

AES Andes, a south American power company, has begun the permitting process for a 258 MW wind farm in Bio Bio, Chile. The Rinconada wind farm is planned to have 43 turbines, each with a capacity of 6 MW, as well as the necessary transmission infrastructure.

Hevel installs 2.6 MW of off-grid solar-diesel in Russia

In Russia’s Arctic zone, Hevel Energo Servis, a subsidiary of Russian solar energy company Hevel, has installed two off-grid power stations totalling 2.6 MW, combining diesel engines with solar PV and storage systems. The plants are located in the Far East villages of Snezhnoye and Kanchalan in the Chukotka autonomous region.

Azelio receives order for 20 energy storage units in Egypt

Azelio, based in Sweden, has won a conditional order from Egypt’s Engazaat Development SAE for 20 of its TES.POD renewable energy storage devices. The TES.POD devices will be financed, implemented, and maintained by a project business co-owned by Azelio and Engazaat Development SAE, and will be utilised in Egypt’s SAVE sustainable agricultural initiative. The order is worth roughly $1.5 million and is expected to be delivered in December 2021.

Israel receives 11 bids for a 300 MW solar and energy storage plant

Israel has received 11 bids to finance, build, and manage a 300 MW solar power project with energy storage in the southern part of the country. According to the government, the project proposed for Dimona will be a public-private partnership and will be one of Israel’s largest solar power plants. The chosen developer will be in charge of the solar power plant’s development, funding, construction, and operation.

Bangladesh floats a tender for 68 MW solar park

An international tender for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) of a 68 MW solar PV park in Bangladesh’s Sirajganj area has been issued. The Bangladesh China Renewable Energy Company Ltd, a joint venture between Bangladesh’s North-West Power Generation Company Limited and the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation, has launched the bid, which includes the construction of a 15km 132 kV double circuit transmission line with a substation bay extension.

PGE selects advisor for 2.5 GW offshore wind project in Poland

PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, a Polish utility, has chosen Societe Generale SA, a French bank, to act as its adviser in acquiring finance for the development of the 2.5-GW Baltica offshore wind project off the coast of Poland. After submitting a $2.2 million offer, Societe Generale was chosen in a bidding procedure.

DOB equity to acquire stakes worth upto $5 million in East Africa

DOB Equity, a Dutch family-backed impact investor specializing in East African ventures, intends to buy interests in at least three firms this year, despite a drop in private equity deals in the region. Investments are planned in the electric mobility, insurance, and health-tech industries. The transactions vary from $250,000 to more than $5 million, with shareholdings ranging from 10 percent to 49 percent.

Mozambique opens a 200 kWp solar power plant

The Mozambican government is launching a 200 kWp solar power facility at Matchedje, a town in the province of Niassa. The plant is linked to a mini-grid that will power 400 homes. The Mozambican Energy Fund funded the building of these new facilities.

Octopus Renewables has strengthened its position in the Irish energy market by purchasing a 24% stake in Simply Blue Group for €15 million. The move comes two weeks after Octopus Renewables Infrastructure Trust (ORIT) paid up to €145 million for a portfolio from Statkraft.

Hanwha acquires 100 per cent stake in RES France for $855.2 million

Hanwha Solutions has invested $855.2 million for a 100 percent share in renewable energy producer RES France in order to extend its business portfolio in Europe. As a result of this agreement, Hanwha Solutions will have complete ownership of RES France’s solar and wind power projects totaling 5 GW, which was handled by the company’s green energy business Hanwha Q Cells.

EDF and Masdar commission the first wind farm in Saudi Arabia

The 400MW Dumat Al Jandal project, Saudi Arabia’s first and largest wind farm, is now linked to the grid and producing electricity, according to developers EDF Renewables and Masdar. Vestas’ V150-4.0/4.2 wind turbines, each capable of generating 4.2MW to the grid, are used in the 400MW project.
